Lola Ingga’s Tapuey: An art photograph on canvas sold

An art photograph on canvas entitled Lola Ingga’s Tapuey by Bryan Rapadas was purchased by no less than the Honorable Imee Marcos, Governor of Ilocos Norte. The governor has been staunchly promoting the arts and culture of the province and that she wanted these art pieces be showcased in her humble office. This particular canvas photograph is now strategically hanging in the wall of the governor’s office.

Lola Ingga, an old woman, is a veteran in making the rice wine called tapuey. The members of The Ilocandia Photographic Society (TIPS) were invited in the year 2010 in the town of Adams to shoot its tourism sites. One of the town’s attractions is the making and drinking of tapuey. Lola Ingga demonstrated the procedures in making the said wine and offered each of her guests to drink her product. After which a photograph session was conducted and TIPSter Bryan did a good portrait of her with her burnay or jars on her side.

TIPS elects new set of officers

The Ilocandia Photographic Society (TIPS) has recently celebrated its 2nd year anniversary and a new set of officers was elected to function for a one year term.

Panagsubalit: TIPS gives back

As thanksgiving and celebration of the wonderful two years of The Ilocandia Photographic Society (TIPS), its members thought of sharing their blessings to a home for the aged. The group conducted an outreach activity for the elder residents of the Balay Taripato.

The outreach was titled as Panagsubalit: TIPS gives back. Panagsubalit is an Ilocano term that means to share the blessings. Balay Taripato, literally means the home for care, is a project of the provincial government of Ilocos Sur. There are 21 residents in this institution with varied medical situations such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, blindness, and others.

A mass was celebrated by Fr. Joy and a simple program was held starting with a welcome speech by the administrator of the center Mr. Joy and a response speech by TIPS president Dr. June Orosa.

The residents showcased some of their talents during a socialization program. Lola Belen had a piano recital, Lola Flora did her funny story telling and Lolo Renato sang a beautiful song. The staff members did also dance numbers and sang. TIPSters of course did some entertainment numbers with Archi Joseph with a piano recital and a solo number by Dr. June.

Later, the group shared to the beneficiaries their gifts and tokens. There were cans of biscuits, toothpastes, brushes, soaps, detergent powders, clothes, medicines, noodles and other food stuff donated to the residents. They were happy to receive them all and a lunch was later on served to everyone courtesy of Mr. Carlo.

It was a fulfilling day for all the members of the TIPS group who participated in this event. The group hopes to be of service again to the community.

TIPS turns 2 years old

The Ilocandia Photographic Society (TIPS) has celebrated its second year anniversary at the towns of Cabugao in Ilocos Sur and Currimao in Ilocos Norte one after the other on April 3, 2011. It has been two fruitful and meaningful years that the organization had been into existence since it was established in 2009. This feat was made possible to the support of its growing number of members who stuck together through good and bad times.

The celebration was started with an outreach activity conducted by the group to the home for the aged in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur called Balay Taripato. TIPS members shared their time and gifts with the elder residents of the said institution.

Later in the day, the group headed to Playa Tropical in Currimao Ilocos Norte where they partied the night with a sumptuous dinner by the pool side. They staged a simple program with the president’s report. Then later they had an election of a new set of officers for the new term.

Palayupuyan: An art photograph on canvas sold

An art photograph on canvas entitled Palayupuyan by Mark Louie Chan was purchased by Dr. Jovencio Cuanang of St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Cuanang is an art patron who maintains art galleries in Manila and Rizal. He has big passion for collecting art pieces especially paintings and now he has artwork in the form of photograph to add to his collection.

Palayupuyan is an Ilocano term that refers to a breezy rest place. The subject is a resort owned by no less than Dr Cuanang situated near the Sitio Remedios Resort in Currimao, Ilocos Norte. It was shot in 2009 in an IR form and converted into black and white. The said photograph was exhibited during the Rubuatan on December 2010 at the Museo Iloco, Laoag City.

Daklis: An art photograph on canvas sold

Daklis, an art photograph on canvas by Dr. Edwin V. Antonio was purchased by Dr. Francis Ranada Jr. of Ranada General Hospital. Dr Ranada is one of the Outstanding Laoaguenos for 2011 and he has that passion for collecting art pieces depicting ocean and other bodies of water. The said photograph was reserved by his wife Mrs Mildred Ranada during the launch of the Rubuatan Exhibit at the Museo Iloco in Laoag City on December 2010.

Ilocano term daklis is the title of the photograph and it means fishing. It was taken at Gabu, Laoag City in the year 2009 during the harvest of ipon, a tiny fish endemic to Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Cagayan Valley.

TIPS documents Guling-guling Festival

It was another year of Fat Tuesday celebration and the town of Paoay in Ilocos Norte recently celebrated Guling-guling Festival. It is an annual festivity to signify the last day of merrymaking before the observance of the Lenten Season by the Catholic community. Guling-guling is the Ilocano term for smearing a cross on the forehead with white rice flour symbolizing purification of oneself from past sins.

This festival was introduced by the Spanish friars in the 16th century and thereby being celebrated for over 400 years now. This is a much more somber celebration compared to other celebrations in the world such as in New Orleans and in Brazil.

The Ilocandia Photographic Society (TIPS) members did not pass this event because they consider this as one of the best festivals in the province. They covered the assembly of dancers from the beginning point to their exciting street dancing, to the dramatic smearing highlight by the mayor, to the fabulous dance showdown and to the grand fireworks display.
